LEWISTON, N.Y.-# 15 Niagara Purple Eagles Mens Hockey won the first of a two game series against Mercyhurst to close out the regular season Friday night, 4-2. Niagara will travel to play Mercyhurst again in Erie, PA Saturday night at 7 PM.

The Purple Eagles jumped out on the Lakers early scoring 2 goals in the first period, and likewise in the second period. Niagara surrendered 2 goals in the third period, but it was too little, too late for Mercyhurst. Senior #21 Giancarlo Luorio continued his hot streak with another goal Friday night for The Purple Eagles, and Senior # 3 Jason Beattie was the star of the night with 1 goal and 1 assist. Junior # 1 Carson Chubak stood his ground in goal saving 31 Mercyhurst shots. On Friday night after the game Niagara accepted the AHA regular season championship trophy, which is a great accomplishment for the 2013 Purple Eagles. Mercyhurst got goals from Junior captain # 18 Daniel O'Donoghue, and #26 Ryan Misiak.

Senior captain # 28 Dan Weiss and Freshman #19 Hugo Turcotte also added goals for Niagara Friday as they improve to 20-6-5 overall, 18-3-2 in the AHA. The Purple Eagles have a quick turnaround and will face-off against Mercyhurst again Saturday night for their final regular season game.
