NIAGARA FALLS, NY - For the first time ever, police and community groups ran gun buyback programs in the Niagara County communities of Niagara Falls and Lockport.

Both cities decided that recent incidents of gun violence should spur an effort to get some weapons off the streets.

Both working and non working guns as well as ammunition were collected during the afternoon programs. Cash payouts from ten dollars for non - working guns up to 100 dollars for rifles classified as assault weapons were provided to those residents who turned them in.

Organizers like the Mad Dads group said as many as 50 guns were turned in in the first hour of the program and they expected many more. Lockport officials reported 117 handguns and 61 unwanted long guns were turned in.
