DEPEW, NY - Depew police officers attempting to pull over a speeding vehicle on Transit Road early Saturday morning ended up on a wild, high-speed chase through the village and into Lancaster, according to a statement released by police Saturday afternoon.
Derrick Campbell, 22, of Alden was driving on Transit near Broadway at about 1:45 a.m. when officers attempted to pull over his 2001 Subaru Forester. Campbell bolted and the police followed, eventually being joined by Lancaster Police in the pursuit.
At one point, Campbell drove directly into the path of an oncoming Depew police vehicle, forcing the police crusier to take evasive action in order to avoid a head-on collision.
Campbell was taken into custody and charged with dozens of vehicle and traffic law violations, and a criminal violation for attempting to ram the Depew police vehicle.
He was arraigned in the Village of Depew Justice Court, and bail was set at $10,000 cash or a $75,000 bond. He was taken to the Erie County Holding Center and is due back in court on March 6th at 9 a.m. to face a further criminal proceeding, police said.
