WASHINGTON (AP) - Conservative senators had been hoping to end the administration's gun-control push before legislation could even get to the floor -- but the Senate has voted Thursday to let the measure move ahead to debate and a vote.

Congress hasn't approved sweeping gun restrictions since the assault weapons ban 19 years ago that wasn't renewed a decade later.

And the prospects may not be much brighter this time, just four months after the shooting deaths of 20 first-graders and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
