AMHERST, NY - When young Theo Bellavia was diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, doctors used more than a thousand units of blood to cure the potentialy fatal condition.
Now that Theo has recovered, his mother Gina has come up with a plan to replace all that blood.
She has enlisted the help of the American Red Cross, and generosity of donors to collect 1,003 pints of blood.
A blood drive was held Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel in Amherst and Gina and Theo were there to thank everyone who donated.
Photojournalist Dooley O'Rourke spoke with Theo about what means to give and give back.
