AMHERST, NY - An Amherst mother is suing the makers of high fructose corn syrup for $5 million. The lawsuit claims that the sugary substance which is found in countless food products caused her daughter to contract type 2 diabetes.

Channel 2 On Your Side's Kelly Dudzik sat down with the local attorney who filed the suit on behalf of the family and asked him why he thinks the manufacturers should be held liable. Attorney Michael Hayes believes he has filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against six major high fructose corn syrup manufacturers.

According to the lawsuit, the girl and her mother are going after the companies for pain and suffering, emotional distress, a shortened life expectancy, and the rigorous dietary restrictions the teen now faces for the rest of her life.

Hayes wants $5 million in damages for his client, an anonymous 14-year-old Western New York girl who developed type 2 diabetes two years ago.

He told Kelly that his interest in nutrition led him to put an ad in the paper offering to represent clients in a diabetes lawsuit, and that's how the family in this case found him.
