Monday, I learned that kindergarten is not a mandated program in New York.
That surprised me. By doing a quick search on the web, I found out New York is one of only a small handful of states that does not require kindergarten.
I attended public schools in Connecticut. I went to half day kindergarten. I think my Mom and Dad signed me up for afternoon kindergarten because they knew that even as a five-year-old I was a night owl and function better after noon.
The Niagara Wheatfield School District is not unique in that it has budget problems. I have a feeling that it could be just one of many districts across the state to look at the possibility of cutting its kindergarten program. I hope it isn't cut!
