AMHERST, NY -   Tyler Penberthy seems to have a lot on his plate these days. A high school senior at Williamsville North, Tyler works, participates in several sports, is the Vice President of the National Honor Society, and volunteers his spare time at The Teacher's Desk.

"Volunteering is all about finding something that is important to you," he says. "It's finding something that's really going to hit home so that you don't mind coming here for 3 to 4 hours, 2 to 3 times a week and spending time."

Tyler definitely found that certain something, which was inspired by his brother who is studying in the field of Education. Tyler has spent over 17 hours working in nearly every area of The Teacher's Desk, a store where teachers shop for free to help students in need have the supplies they need to get through the school year.

The Teacher's Desk was established in 2011, and in its first year of operation the store distributed over $400,000 in free school supplies to teachers and students in need throughout Western New York.

And Tyler's volunteer work is spreading to many of his friends and fellow students at Williamsville North.

"He's the kind of kid you hope for. You hope every child you have turns out to be a Tyler," said John Mika, the Director of The Teacher's Desk.

Volunteering isn't the only good deed Tyler has done for the store, either. Acting in his duty as Vice President for the National Honor Society for his school, he was instrumental in overseeing a fundraising project to directly benefit The Teacher's Desk. He even presented the check, worth $1030.50, to the store. Tyler had also reached out a local business and convinced them to contribute an additional $1000 for school supplies.

To recognize Tyler's great contributions to the community, Bryant & Stratton College has named Tyler Penberthy the May winner in The Great Give Back 2013 and has donated $1,000 to The Teacher's Desk.
