Doctors say a scan of blood vessels in the mouth could determine your risk for colon cancer.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center studied patients with a hereditary form of colon cancer -- a disease so severe the risk for the cancer is one hundred percent by middle age.

By inserting a camera-like device into the mouths of patients with this condition -- and comparing the results to those of people without the disease -- they found 90 percent of the patients had more blood vessels in their mouths.

Researchers say tumors spur the growth of new blood vessels to help the disease spread, including areas other than the colon.
