A 25-year study on the impact of extremely low-calorie diets on monkeys finds that the thin ones did not live any longer than those kept at more normal weights.

Male monkeys were fed so little, they would be the size equivalent of a 6-foot tall man weighing as little as 120 pounds.

Lab tests did show lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, but only in male monkeys whose calories were cut by one-third once they reached old age.

Researchers had hoped the long-term study would show such calorie restrictions would prolong life.
