Using an iPad or kindle may help people with vision loss read better and faster.

A new study from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey tested the reading speed of 100 patients with either macular degeneration or diabetes-related vision problems.

Compared to reading a newspaper or book -- using electronic tablets improved reading speed in all of the patients.

Researchers think the ability to increase the font and the back-lit screens are key.

The screens improved reading speed by 15 words per minute, on average.
