an experimental drug has successfully improved movement in lab mice with spinal cord injuries.

ohio state university researchers say the drug -- which is given orally -- is not only effective, but showed no toxic effects to the animals.

the drug works by preventing the death of cells that protect the nerves damaged during an injury -- instead of trying to regenerate new cells.

mice that were given the highest daily doses of medication over the 6-week period showed huge improvements in walking and swimming, while those on lower doses had difficulty with these tasks.
