a recent study finds pre-natal and childhood exposure to chemicals in flame retardants may increase the risk of attention disorders and other problems.

these compounds -- called p-b-d-e's -- are found in some foam furniture, electronics, carpets, upholstery and can be inhaled through dust.

researchers found children who had higher blood concentrations of p-b-d-e's at the age of 7 ... had more neurodevelopmental delays than their peers.

many had attention issues, problems with fine motor skills and below average i-q scores.

experts recommend sealing any tears in upholstered furniture and to be sure children are washing their hands frequently.
