New guidelines suggest not all children with frequent ear infections should get tubes.

Experts now say only children with hearing difficulties and fluid in both ears for more than three months should be candidates for the procedure. or, children with fluid in one ear who have balance issues or ear discomfort.

They say fluid will often resolve on its own, so some children can be spared the procedure.

The new guidelines also say children with tubes can swim at the pool or beach without ear plugs -- in a majority of cases the water won't get in their ears.
