The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to beware of a scam using the name of the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.

The BBB says someone is sending official-looking letters to people's homes, claiming that the recipients have won $1 million from the Publishers Clearing House.

There are several ways to recognize the scam offer:

  • The letter states the the recipient has won $1 million from Publishers Clearing House as the second-place winner of a drawing sponsored by Reader's Digest Magazine.
  • A check for up to $5900 is included with the letter. The recipient is instructed to call a PCH representative to claim his prize.
  • Over the phone, the recipient is told to cash the check and wire $4000 to PCH in order to receive the rest of the prize money.

The BBB says the checks are fraudulent and any money wired to the scammers cannot be recovered.
