BUFFALO, N.Y. - Dr. James Corasanti has been acquitted on all charges except a lesser D.W.I. charge. The verdict came after the jury was deadlocked. Both sides agreed the jury could issue a partial verdict.
2 On Your Side's Michael Wooten says the hand of the jury foreperson shook as the verdict was read. People gasped in the courtroom. Dr. Corasanti broke down weeping before standing up to hug his attorney Tom Burton. The victim's step-father was escorted out of the court after saying an obscenity.
Defense Attorney Tom Burton says, "We believe the jury understands this for exactly what it was a tragic , horrible accident." The defense team also extended their condolences to the Rice family after the verdict.
District Attorney Frank Sedita says, "We are disappointed and frankly shocked at the verdict, but I'm not going to criticize the deliberations of an Erie County criminal jury."
Corasanti is scheduled to be sentenced for Common Law D.W.I. on August 16th. The charge is classifed as a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, $1,000 fine and probation.
