AMHERST, N.Y. - A woman who was an inspiration to many was the focus today of a special event in Amherst.

The Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Western New York held a memorial walk on the Amherst Bike Path to honor 81-year-old Sheila Pelton, who ran and walked marathons to help raise funds for the organization.

Pelton was killed last Sunday when she was struck while walking on a path near Tonawanda Creek Road by a motorcyclist who is now charged with drunk driving and criminally negligent homicide.

Pelton was a breast cancer survivor who endured many operations but encouraged others with illness to go on with her kind spirit and energy.

"She was courageous, she was disciplined, she was motivating, She was everything," said Pat LaDuca, who organized the memorial walk. "Her heart caring that touched everybody's life, everybody's lives. The way she passed was just senseless."

Many people who knew Sheila Pelton turned out for this event.
Pelton's 79 year old husband Foster, who was also hurt in the crash, is still at ECMC with serious injuries.
