OLEAN, N.Y. -- A proposal to cut the number of full time city firefighters in Olean was taken off the table.

City Council President Jim Brady wanted to cap the number of paid firefighters at 20, and hire volunteers to assist the paid ones due to financial issues in the city.  The proposal brought quite a crowd to council chambers Tuesday night, a crowd that one council member told us wanted to keep firefighters on the payroll.

"We can start over and we can reduce taxes and we can find other cost saving measures that will not jeopardize the public safety of our residents," said City Councilwoman Ann McLaughlin.

The union that represents the firefighters also filed a grievance against the city over the proposed reduction in the number of paid firefighters.
