BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An American Catholic author and commentator says the new Pope is a game changer.

Father Thomas Reese, a Jesuit and senior fellow from Georgetown University spoke at Canisius College Tuesday night.  Father Reese is considered an expert on the U.S. Catholic Church and spent time in Rome during the conclave when Pope Francis was elected.

Our Maryalice Demler asked him what he thinks Pope Francis will bring to the modern church.

"He's bringing a whole new style to the church. He's changing the culture of the church. One of the big sins of the church is clericalism. And he's cutting through that. I mean he's modeling how a priest should be a priest.  How we're supposed to bring people to Jesus. And this makes me very optimistic," said Father Reese.

In his lecture, Father Reese said he is very optimistic about the future of the Catholic Church, and feels that Francis is providing the right kind of focus and leadership.

He said other positive signs include more Catholics actively reading the Bible, doing charity work, and the laity is also getting more involved in the ministries and leadership of their parishes.
