WESTERN NEW YORK - Alfred State student Kayla Franchina remembers how special her prom was, and she wants to make sure other girls get to celebrate that special day.

"It's very expensive. Not just the dress, you have to include the hair, shoes, nails," said Franchina.

Add it all up, and for many girls, it's a cost they just can't afford.  That's why she started Project Prom Dress a few years ago when she was a senior at Cassadaga Valley High School.

"I spent my entire spring break driving around the community and picking up dresses, as far as Buffalo," said Franchina.

After she graduated, other students kept the prom dress drive going.

Now Franchina is expanding the drive to include communities around Alfred State.

She will once again throw a prom dress party where high school girls in need of a gown can pick one out for free.

"It's just like trading gowns with your best friend, which I've done many times for many dances. That's what I wanted it to be like."

She is looking to collect at least 500 dresses for this year's party.

The event is Saturday, April 20th from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Pioneer Lounge in the Pioneer Center on the Alfred State campus.
