BUFFALO, NY-- It just got a lot easier for folks to get close to the water at Buffalo's Canalside.

A ribbon cutting unveiled a 520 foot dock extension along the Central Warf, that doubles the old length, and will allow for up to 40 additional boats to dock at Canalside.

In addition, the additional dock space provides access for kayaks, canoes, water bikes and other non-motorized craft to be launched.

The money for the expansion came from the New York Power Authority and state Inner Harbor funds.

"I welcome you. Enjoy your waterfront!" said Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation President Robert Gioia at the official ribbon cutting on Friday.

"This is all about public access, public process and there will be even more exciting news in the weeks and months ahead on how we can reconnect this community to our valuable waterfront," Gioia added.

Buffalo Harbor Kayak is now set up at the south end of the site towards the Skyway and new this year are water bike rentals.

The docks are also handicapped accessible and contain a floating platform to allow for safe and easy docking for larger vessels, like tall ships.

This year, Canalside will host more than 800 events and activities.
