BUFFALO, NY - If you drove through downtown Buffalo this morning, you may have seen some Sabres on street corners.

The Buffalo Fire Department held its annual "Fill the Boot" drive today and they had help from some of the Buffalo Sabres players, like forward Patrick Kaleta.

The money collected helps fund research to cure a motor neuron disease that not many people know abou, but one that is not uncommon. It's called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

"We formed a foundation about five years ago called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Research Team, which we like to dub SMART," says says Matthew Reilly, who has the disease. His family started an organization dedicated to funding a cure. "It's a foundation that's entirely dedicated to finding funding for research for a cure to SMA."

The SMART foundation is also holding its fifth annual fundraiser this Saturday at the First Niagara Center.
