TONAWANDA, NY - Candles were lit and memories were shared Sunday night as the Ken-Ton community remembered 12-year-old Imani Gilbert.

"Anyone who knew Imani knew that he was full of life and full of energy. You could never say anything bad about him. The kid always had a smile in every picture you saw him in," said Kent Yarger, a family friend.

The candlelight vigil took place at the intersection of Delaware Road and Sheridan Drive, where Gilbert was hit and killed by a car two weeks ago.

"When I found out about the news it absolutely broke my heart, I lost it," Yarger said.

Members of a local semi-pro football team organized the remembrance service. Gilbert's father, Terrance Ferguson, is a running back for the team and Gilbert was one of their biggest fans.

"He pushed our players harder and always got into their ear. You can do better, you can run better, you can throw better, you can catch better - always pushed each and every one of us and was an absolute joy to have on the field," said Yarger.

"What happened to him was very tragic, but we know we all have another guardian angel watching over all of us."
