Texting Driver Sideswipes Cop; Domestic Argument Leads to Crash

LACKAWANNA, NY-- Lackawanna Police were busy Friday afternoon investigating two accidents, including one that injured a Lackawanna Police officer.

Lackawanna Police say an officer traveling eastbound in the left lane on Ridge Road in his patrol vehicle was struck by a vehicle in the right lane, forcing him into westbound traffic and off the road before coming to a stop.

The driver of the other vehicle was texting when the accident happened.

The officer was hurt and taken to South Buffalo Mercy Hospital where he was treated and released. The driver of the other car, Shawn Semple, of Buffalo, was also hurt. He was taken to a local hospital but his condition is unknown. at this time  

Semple is charged with texting while driving, driving with a suspended license and unsafe lane change.

Around the same time, Lackawanna Police responded to a report of a car that hit a house on Ingham Street.

Investigators say a couple traveling northbound on Ingham were arguing. The driver told police that the passenger grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to leave the roadway and hit a house.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.   

No one in the house was hurt. The accident caused damage to the foundation of the home.
