NEWSTEAD, NY-- Some residents of Newstead recently contacted our Tipline to ask about the status of the Cedar Street Bridge repair project. That span carries traffic over Tonawanda Creek between Erie and Niagara Counties but it has been closed for months.

The $4.1 Million dollar project is actually supported with federal stimulus funding to re-construct the steel truss bridge which was judged to be in poor condition. It was supposed to be completed by this past summer.

Niagara County Public Works Director Kevin O'Brien tells 2 On Your Side that the project ran into delays because the contractor had to carry out extensive, sophisticated tests to make sure there is not metal fatigue in the structure. It is necessary to guarantee the safety of the bridge. The truss design actually elevates the bridge above the creek which can  have high water levels.

O'Brien says the steel structure is now in place but work has stopped for the winter. It should resume in the spring with the pouring of concrete and paving. O'Brien says if there are no other delays or weather issues, the bridge should re-open to traffic in June 2011.
