In addition to paying more at the pump, motorists will be hearing a lot about higher gas prices in the political world.

The prospect of $4-a-gallon gas nationwide is giving Republicans a new issue to whack President Obama this election season.

"We have a president who, in my opinion, sees that energy consumption in America is a problem, not a good, that we need to have less energy consumption," said GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum. "And one way to do that is to make energy prices higher. His policies have done everything they can to slow down energy production."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, noted that "gas prices have more than doubled since the president took office."

Obama and aides said they support more oil and gas production, as long as it is done in an environmentally sound manner. They also say the president has "an all of the above" approach when it comes to energy development, ranging from natural gas to solar and wind power.

But they also know that, in many ways, gas prices are beyond their control, especially given all the turmoil in the Middle East -- including the prospect of an Israeli attack on Iran.

In a recent appearance on ABC's This Week, Obama campaign aide Robert Gibbs noted that "our domestic oil production is at an eight-year high," and new sources of energy are being developed.

"There are no magic bullets to solve this problem," Gibbs said. "We're going to have to do all of these things. We're going to have to look for more energy here at home. We're going to have to conserve energy. We're going to have to make the energy we use more efficient. All of those things will help us get ahead of this problem."
