AMHERST, NY - A new Muslim mosque in Amherst celebrated its grand opening Saturday afternoon.
The Jaffarya Center on Transit Road held a ribbon cutting and inauguration ceremony for its members and the public. Awards were given out to those involved with the creation of the center.
Dr. Syed S. Jaffri is involved with the Center and attended Saturday's celebration. He says he hopes the center works towards racial, social, and religious harmony.
The opening of the Jaffarya Center comes just one week after a neighbor to the center posted a sign on his lawn that read "Bomb Making Next Driveway." Homeowner Michael Heick says he posted the sign to draw attention to problems he's had with the mosque regarding building standards and codes.
Despite the sign, leaders at the mosque said Saturday, "The response from the community has been tremendous. And we're very grateful for public officials and residents of Western New York for their support."
