Attica Prison Riots

BUFFALO, NY -- This week marks 40 years since the nation's deadliest prison uprising took place at the Attica Correctional Facility, located 35 miles east of Buffalo, in 1971.

39 men - 10 hostages and 29 inmates - were killed when State Police retook the prison; one corrections officer died from a beating by inmates when the riot broke out on September 9th; and inmates killed three other prisoners during the four-day standoff.

On the 40th anniversary of the riot, there continues to be constant historical analysis of the riot.  Through historic photographs and video, and through multiple interviews with people connected to the riot, 2 On Your Side and our sister newspaper in Rochester, The Democrat and Chronicle, are exploring how its impact continues to reverberate today in the regional, New York state and national conscience.
