Niagara Falls, NY - People in Niagara County turned out Sunday to help recruit a new four legged member of law enforcement.

The benefit at a fire hall in Pendleton was set up to help cover the cost of a new K-9 dog for the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

K-9 Officer Rocky died last December when he fell from the six story roof of a building in Niagara Falls while searching for suspects in the abandoned building.

Rocky's handler, Deputy Craig Beiter, points out that police dogs can be extremely valuable in investigations. "They kinda speed up the process searching for drugs. They can do it more efficiently and a lot faster than people can due to their noses."

The estimated cost for a new police dog can run $12,000 with the additional training.
