A remembrance gathering was held Monday night at the College at Brockport for Alexandra Kogut, who was killed on campus Saturday.

College President John Halstead said the murder of a student has brought the community together in mourning.

"We will be resilient. We have come together," said Halstead at a news conference Monday.

Kogut was found in her McLean Hall dorm room at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, not long after the killing is believed to have occurred, police said. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Utica College student Clayton Whittemore was arrested several hours later at a rest stop near Syracuse and charged with second-degree murder.

During the news conference Monday, Halstead said the Brockport campus is safe, and that proper procedures were followed.

"There was no breach of security in this case. The young man was checked in," Halstead said.

School Police Chief Robert Kehoe said every safety and security protocol was followed. A night desk attendant was at the dormitory's check-in station, and a resident assistant was in a nearby room, he said.
