BUFFALO, NY - A jury returned a guilty verdict Monday in the trial of 59-year-old James Washington, who was accused of engaging in multiple sex acts with a 12-year-old girl over the course of nearly half a year.

The Erie County District Attorney's office said the victim delayed reporting the abuse because Washington had told her he would "go away for a long time" and that her family would "hate her" if she told them about the sexual abuse.

Washington was convicted of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree and of criminal sexual acts in the second degree, the highest charges for which he could have been convicted. He faces a maximum sentence of 32 years in prison when sentenced by Erie County Court Judge Ken Case on December 19th.

The week-long trial was prosecuted by the Erie County Special Victim's Bureau, Chief Roseanne Johnson. Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III praised Johnson and Buffalo Sex Offense Squad Detective Natalie Perez, saying that "because of their dedication and professionalism, a sexual predator has been brought to justice."
