ALDEN, NY - Family and friends gathered Monday to say a final farewell to a Western New York soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The funeral service for Army Specialist Brett Gornewicz  was held at St. John's Church in Alden.

Gornewicz, a combat engineer, was killed by an IED blast last weekend in Afghanistan while handling the dangerous duty of clearing roadside bombs.

The Alden native's body was returned to the U.S. on Sunday.  A military honor guard unloaded his casket from the plane in a formal ceremony at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Then state and local police and sheriff's deputies led a procession to Alden.  People lined the route to pay respects to the fallen soldier and the Gornewicz family.

Military officials say Spc. Gornewicz, 27, was one of three soldiers killed November 3 when their unit was hit with an IED (improvised explosive device) in the Paktia province of Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, N.Y. and Spc. Ryan P. Jayne, 22, of Campbell, N.Y. were also killed.

The three soldiers were members of the 479th Engineering Battalion, out of Watertown, N.Y.
