CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Volunteer firefighter Edward Tokasz celebrated a very special milestone Saturday with his friends at the Doyle Hose Company No. 2.
Tokasz has been an active member of the department since 1938, when his father encouraged him to join at age 18.
His fellow members presented him with several awards and mementos at a small gathering to honor his decades of service.
Tokasz, now 93, held various titles within the department, from assistant chief to his more recent position as deputy fire district treasurer.
He saw dozens of members come and go, and watched as the neighborhood he served changed. His son James is a 52 year member of the department. His other son, Paul, is a former member of the fire company.
Other members say Tokasz only recently stopped going on emergency calls. They recalled his eagerness to help people and said he was known for running or riding his bike to the station without his shoes tied because he was in such a hurry to answer a call.
