ROCHESTER, NY-- The Rochester Americans' outdoor "Celebration of Hockey" will be a 10-day festival that runs Dec. 13-22 at Frontier Field, the team announced Thursday morning.
The Amerks will play an outdoor game on the first day, and the festival also will include an Amerks-Sabres alumni game, an RIT men's and women's doubleheader and area high school teams. Tickets will go on sale this summer. Amerks and Red Wings season ticket holders will be assured tickets to the festival, officials announced.
Local hockey fans were overjoyed with the news when it broke Wednesday. The team offered more details at a news conference this morning.
Aside from the scheduled hockey games, 75-minute blocks of ice time will be sold to charities, corporations and the public. Adult and youth league games also will have the opportunity to play outside at Frontier Field throughout the week.
After the Amerks' game on Dec. 13, the schedule includes the RIT doubleheader on Dec. 14 in which the men face Niagara and the women go up against Clarkson. The alumni game is slated for Dec. 15 and officials aim to have six Section V high school hockey games scheduled.
Sabres president Ted Black was on hand for the announcement. He said this is "our way" of saying thanks for borrowing the team during the NHL lockout. The Amerks played two games in Buffalo until the lockout was resolved earlier this season.
