ALBANY, NY-- More than 20,000 State University of New York students and alumni might get refunds because they paid out-of-state tuition while they were eligible for in-state rates, SUNY announced Friday.
The 64-campus system will begin notifying current and former students who were enrolled between Fall 2007 and Spring 2011 and might be eligible for a refund. The refunds are available as a result of a class-action settlement in a case brought by three former Binghamton University students from New Jersey who commuted to New York for high school.
Students who graduated from a New York state high school or received a GED diploma from the state are eligible for in-state tuition costs at SUNY, which are significantly less than non-resident costs. The former Binghamton students who sued SUNY paid almost twice what they would have if they'd known they were eligible for in-state tuition.
As part of the settlement, SUNY agreed to more clearly list the costs of attendance on notices and publications so future students will be aware of their eligibility for the in-state tuition.
SUNY campuses with students who might be eligible includes Binghamton, the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Cortland, Geneseo and New Paltz, among others.
