MAYVILLE, N.Y. - Chautauqua County health officials are urging the public to be cautious after this year's first confirmed case of rabies in a bat.

A person in the town of Ellington woke up to find the bat flying around their room. That person got rabies prevention shots, as anyone who comes into contact with a potentially rabid animal should.

Rabies almost always leads to death without prompt treatment.

People should avoid contact with bats, especially ones exhibiting unusual signs like aggressiveness and daytime activity.

If there is any chance you or a pet has been in contact with a potentially rabid bat, capture the bat without touching it using heavy gloves and a pail or coffee can and call your local health department. The Chautauqua County department can be reached at 1-866-604-6789.
