BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano hosted a famed actor this Saturday at the Sabres vs. Tampa Bay Lightning game. James Woods was not in town for the game, though. He was searching the city to find the perfect place to film his new movie.
"I was searching for the heartland of America, and I couldn't think of a better place than Buffalo," said Woods in an interview with 2 On Your Side's Stu Boyar. Woods plans to step away from the silver screen and take on the roles of director and producer.
The film, entitled An American Girl, is set to star Kristen Stewart, the actress most commonly known for her leading role in the Twilight films. Stewart will play a woman who enlists in the Marines in hopes of finding herself, only to be wounded in the line of duty. Stewart currently holds the top spot on the Internet Movie Database's (IMDb) STARMeter according to Western New York Film Commissioner Tim Clark.
"This movie honors all people who stand in harms way for others," said Woods. "It is a message not told often enough in this industry, and I'm proud to be a part of it."
The project is expected to have a significant economic impact on the city. "There are many medium budget films that leave an impact on our local economy, but this will definitely be significant," said Clark.
He compares this to the impact other projects had on the city including visits from crews from The Office, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and the movie starring Keanu Reeve's that was filmed in part here last month.
"It's not a done deal until I see the trucks rolling in," said Clark. "And even then I'm skeptical."
Clark thinks the movie might begin filming in Buffalo as early as this summer, and Woods hopes to finish in time to qualify for next year's Academy Awards.
