HAMBURG, NY -Four Pennsylvania residents miraculously escaped serious injury when their car became wedged under a tractor trailer Friday morning in Hamburg.
The accident happened shortly after 10 AM on the Thruway, westbound, near Amsdell Road.
State Police say the tractor trailer was moving from the passing to the driving lane when he spotted the car at the last moment and attempted to steer back to the passing lane. The car moved to the shoulder to avoid the truck, then overcorrected to the left, causing the car to slide sideways and become lodged under the truck, just in front of the rear wheels. Three adults in the car had to be extricated from the car.
The driver, Sajjad Raja, 45, of Grove City, was flown by Mercyflight to ECMC suffering from a broken pelvis. His front seat passenger, Gulchera Bano, 88, was taken to ECMC with a broken arm and pelvis. Raja's wife, Saba, 30, was taken to ECMC for a broke leg. Their 10-month old child was taken to Women and Children's Hospital with facial injuries.
The driver of the tractor trailer was from North Carolina and was not hurt. The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit will inspect the truck for any violations or mechanical problems. Charges are pending.
