CHICAGO (AP) - Investigators are expanding the manhunt for two convicted bank robbers who pulled off a daring nighttime escape from a high-rise Chicago jail.

They climbed out a jail window sometime Monday night, and descended 20 stories using a makeshift rope.

The FBI says surveillance footage from a camera nearby shows Kenneth Conley and Joseph Banks getting into a cab at around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday. That's about four hours before workers spotted the rope dangling from the federal jail.

They had changed from their orange jail jumpsuits into light-colored pants and shirts.

Authorities say at least three homes in suburbs south of Chicago where one of the inmates once lived were searched Tuesday. Investigators believe the men had been at a home in Tinley Park just hours before police SWAT teams stormed it.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about the escape. Investigators want to know, for example, how the inmates could have smashed a gaping hole into the wall at the bottom of a six-inch wide window without being heard or seen by guards.
