Take a deep breath. The government says the world will not end in 2012.

NASA scientists have been addressing rumors that the world will end on December 21st because the ancient Mayan calendar stops there.

Here's one scientist's take on why the calendar just ends.

"The Maya believed in cycles. And the current calendar is actually one of several cycles that lasts for thousands of years. The current calendar probably began somewhere around 31,14 before the current era. And these cycles have gone on, and the idea of the cycles has been passed down through some of the mythology of the Maya. And this current one simply ends on December 21st or 23rd, depending on who's doing the translation, of this year. The reason there is no other Maya calendar is because the Spanish arrived and the Mayan civilization was essentially destroyed. They would have done essentially the same thing we do, and just create a new calendar after this cycle ended."

Regardless of the science behind it all, many Doomsday preppers have been stockpiling supplies for years.
