DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Mortar shells have hit a cafeteria at Damascus University in Syria. And according to state media and Syrian officials, at least 15 people have been killed, with 20 others wounded.

Rebels began firing shells at the capital earlier this year, and the attacks have become increasingly common in recent weeks.

State-run TV says the mortar shells struck the cafeteria of the university's architecture department.

There's no claim of responsibility for the attack, which came two days after rebels pounded Damascus with mortar shells that left at least three people dead and wounded dozens.

The shelling has shattered the air of normalcy that the government has tried to cultivate in Damascus. In recent days, rebels have struck deeper than ever into the heart of the city, to try to loosen President Bashar Assad's grip on his main stronghold.
