Double Check 2
BUFFALO, NY (WGRZ) -- You could say cancer survivors are all in the same boat. And that's especially true for a group of women who are battling breast and other types of cancer. Maryalice Demler shows us how they are literally rowing their way through recovery.
The group "We Can Row-- Buffalo" was co-founded in late 2009 by University at Buffalo graduate Lisa DeMarco. The university generously donated the use of their facilities in Alumni Arena and members of the UB Women's Rowing team came on board as coaches. Instructors and students from the Physical Therapy department do pre and post evaluations of team members to assess their abilities.
The team currently has 27 members who are survivors of all different kinds of cancer. They meet twice per week for an hour workout on Ergometers (rowing machines) during the winter training season. The team then uses UB's boathouse and equipment on Tonawanda Creek in the late spring and summer.
We Can Row-- Buffalo is looking for new members! Women who have been cleared by their doctors to begin exercise should contact Lisa DeMarco through the website or by calling her office at 716-983-4766. There is a nominal $50 membership fee that includes use of the facilities and a team shirt.
