BUFFALO, NY -- They say knowledge is power.  That's especially true for women when they're first diagnosed with breast cancer.

Doctors say it helps to learn about cancer, so you know more about it, and what your options are.  That's why Roswell Park Cancer Institute has a breast resource center right on campus filled with books, videos, pamphlets, even wigs to help women who lose their hair from chemotherapy.  The resource room opened 15 years ago with lots of help from breast cancer support groups around the area.  You don't have to be a patient at Roswell to use it and the help there goes beyond books and pamphlets.

"The most important thing that women find in the breast cancer resource center are the people in the breast resource center.  Because more than getting a book, or a videotape, or direction to a computer, they need to have an interaction with someone who understands how to help them with those things, who've seen other people go through the same thing that they've gone through," said Dr. Stephen Edge at Roswell Park.

Joanne Janicki with the Breast Resource Center talked about how they deal with patients who need advice.

"We take the time to ask them what's important to them right now.  What would be the most helpful thing for them right now.   What's their biggest priority right now.  For some people, they want to move straight forward, have surgery.  Other people are more concerned about their children, their spouse, their caregiver," said Janicki.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  You can make an appointment to stop by in the evening too.

The phone number for the WNY Breast Cancer Resource Center at Roswell is (716) 845-4432.
