BUFFALO, NY-- Towne Gardens tenants who have their own washers and dryers received a letter telling them to remove them or face eviction.
Naomi Brown owns her own washer. It's situated in a small utility room in her apartment. "Having the washer here is convenient for me," says Brown, a three-year tenant of Towne Gardens.
In a letter dated July 15, 2010, Towne Gardens management informed tenants that having a washer and dryer "is a violation of your lease."
The letter further stated, "unless the washer and dryer are removed from your apartment within 30 days, your lease will be terminated and eviction proceedings will commence."
Towne Gardens residents are encouraged to use a new laundry center that will open in Towne Gardens Plaza.
Ellicott District Councilman Dr. Curtis Haynes tracked down the owners in Brooklyn, NY. "They realized that they made a mistake and they are going to grandfather into their lease the tenants who already live there and allow them to maintain their washer and dryer in apartment."
However, new tenants will not be allowed to have a washer and/or dryer in their apartment.
