The Wheatfield Town Board has agreed to restore $65,000 in funding for the North Tonawanda Library which was originally cut in Supervisor Robert Cliffe's budget plan for next year.

Cliffe says he was trying to avoid a tax increase in the financially strapped town and suggested dropping the funding line for the NT Library. That library serves Wheatfield town residents through the funding agreement. There will be a final budget vote by the town board on November 19th.

The library board then announced that without the funding,  town residents would not be able to borrow books or DVD's or use some other library services. Concerned residents in turn contacted the town and board members to complain. There were also information signs and a petition drive for town residents in the library.

NT Library Director Peggy Waite says the restoration of the funding is encouraging and now opens the door for negotiations between the library board and the town board.

Supervisor Cliffe says he feels the library went into "attack mode" and still has various questions about future funding agreements between the town and the library. He may also suggest a user fee for town residents who wish to use the library so that all 17,000 residents are not taxed for it.

There will be a public hearing on the budget on Wednesday, November 3rd at 7:00 PM at the Wheatfield Town Hall on Church Road.  The library issue is expected to come up as residents who support library funding say they will attend.
