BUFFALO, NY - Harry Walpole of Buffalo values his independence and his ability to take care of himself, even with the disability of a leg lost to illness and another weak leg.

That's why he must get around in his wheelchair.

But the brake on one side of the wheelchair is broken and Harry is finding it hard to get some help to replace it. He needs the brake to function so he can lock the wheels and steady the wheelchair. That allows him to transfer himself with the use of his arms from his bed and bathroom to his wheelchair

Harry has been coping with this problem for the past three months and says he has fallen several times.

He was told that insurance will not cover a replacement for the brake. He says he is happy to keep using the wheelchair if the brake can be fixed.

So Harry Walpole contacted 2 On Your Side and WGRZ via Facebook.

We aired his story at 5:30 as part of our Tipline segment Thursday evening.  Suddenly people started calling and e-mailing our newsroom to offer their assistance with the brake, or even to donate a new or slightly used wheelchair for Harry.

We'll keep you posted on Harry's story and if he gets his wheelchair fixed.

UPDATE-- 2 On Your Side viewers began to respond immediately after Ron's story aired.  One of them is a generous young woman who knows exactly how it feels to need a hero.  Click on the box at the right to see the story update.
