JAMESTOWN, NY -Jamestown Police is warning residents to be aware of a 'lottery scam' circulating in their city.

Investigators say an elderly Jamestown resident was recently targeted by a lottery scam.

The victim received a letter stating that she had won $1.5 million, with a phone number to call in order to collect her prize. Although she never called the number, she later received a phone call from the company that had sent the letter saying she had won the cash and giving her specific instructions how to collect; instructions which included going to a specific local electronics store and purchasing a $250 gift card.

Anyone who has received a similar letter or phone call is asked to contact the local police agency so that it can be verified and investigated. Legitimate lottery companies do not require any form of up-front payment in order to collect their winnings.
