LEWISTON, N.Y. -- The Village of Lewiston's Police Chief says it's a big mistake if the village board ends its contract with its town police force, and signs with the Niagara County Sheriff's Department to save taxpayers money.

A meeting took place Thursday night with the village board and the Niagara County Sheriff without any consultation with the current village police chief, who requested to be present at the meeting.  The Town of Lewiston currently provides police protection in the village.

Village Chief Christopher Salada says now is certainly not the time to switch coverage in the Village of Lewiston and have sheriff's deputies patrol the area.

"The Village of Lewiston is not growing population wise, but the visitors that come are growing rapidly, now is not the time to slim down public safety," said Salada.

We spoke with Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour after the meeting and he told us he advised the board to try to negotiate a resolution with the town first before exploring future options.
