Mark Davison and former student Mark O'Brien

Iroquois High School social studies teacher Mark Davison has forged strong connections through the years with his students and former students. That includes Mark O'Brien, an Iraq War veteran who suffered the loss of his right arm and right leg in combat but went on to become an inspiring motivational speaker and lecturer.

Now Davison, who is trying to recover after suffering from a severe case of pneumonia,  is actually leaning on and learning from O'Brien in a situation where a student is really teaching his teacher.

Davison was hospitalized for months and was even in a coma as he struggled with pulmonary fibrosis which actually scarred his lungs. Now he is in rehabilitation and is also a candidate for a lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic.

Davison says the rehab has actually been painful for him. But he recalls the experiences of what O'Brien endured. O'Brien's very  positive outlook and success has served as a prime example for Davison to deal with his adversity.

Colleagues at Iroquois have arranged a benefit for Davis for this coming Saturday. It is sold out. But people can also contribute to help cover Davison's substantial medical and personal costs by going to http://www.indiegogo.com/markdavison.

Davison's main goal now is to return to the classroom. And he feels with the support of family, friends, and colleagues and the inspiration of Mark O'Brien he can accomplish that cherished goal.
