WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - Members of the Williamsville Fire Department are playing the role of Santa's little helpers in the hopes of delivering some holiday cheer downstate.

"The rebuilding is going to go on way past the holidays.  It's going to be a struggle for them," said fire chief Christopher Petrie.

The department is holding a toy drive this Saturday to collect gifts for the families of the Island Park Fire Department on Long Island.

All of Island Park's fire equipment was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, and many of its members lost their homes.

Currently 40 firefighter families, including 30 children, are living in the Island Park fire house.

"Then add to that a 5-year-old's hope that Santa is coming to see him. Santa is coming from Western New York," said Williamsville firefighter Holly Schiferle.

The Williamsville Fire Department is teaming up with other departments across Erie County to collect gifts, but they are asking the community's help too.

You can drop off a new, unwrapped toy or holiday gift at the Williamsville Fire Department, 5565 Main Street (next to Williamsville Village Hall) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, December 8th.

The gifts will be delivered to the Island Park Fire Department on December 21st.

The Williamsville Fire Department is also looking for someone to lend them a van or truck to make the delivery.

For more information or to arrange a different drop-off time, call (716) 523-1343.
